Hover, tap or tab to a bar for details. Each bar is the average star rating of written reviews posted in one 90-day window; the last bar is now (last 90 days). The peak counts only windows with 20+ reviews; Now needs 8. The Peak, Now and Drop figures above are these bars. Stored reviews start at Nov 2022. Apple's feed returns only the newest 500 reviews per pull, so older history is missing and the first window may be partial.

The opportunity

written Oct 19, 2026

Vimeo's rating drop is product rot in the app layer, not loss of trust in the platform. Users still value ad-free, high-quality video and creator-to-client workflows, but search, playback, AirPlay, offline viewing and review links are failing them. A small team cannot rebuild Vimeo's viewer network, so a general 'better Vimeo' is a poor bet. The credible wedge is a narrow, very reliable creator tool for private client review and delivery: rock-solid playback, AirPlay, PiP, resumable uploads, and one-tap review links. It would run on commodity streaming infrastructure, with optional import of a creator's existing Vimeo library through the official API.

Table stakes

  • Playback that survives long sessions without crashing, including 10-second skip back/forward without rebuffering loops
  • Resume position synced across iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and web
  • Reliable AirPlay, Picture-in-Picture and background audio using native AVPlayer
  • Resumable chunked uploads that keep going in the background (tus or multipart) with honest progress and retry
  • One-tap private review links with optional password and expiry, viewable in any browser without an account
  • Timecoded comments and approvals on review links, with notifications to the creator
  • Working search across your own library and projects: title, client and tags, with instant local results
  • Offline downloads that actually persist, with visible storage management and a clear-cache control
  • Sign in with Apple plus email magic link, and password reset that accepts any valid email
  • Share links that always resolve, plus a link health check before sending
  • Clear storage and plan usage display; no unexplained on-device bloat

Where the 10x is

  • Reliability as the product: public crash-free-session stats and a hard performance budget (cold start under 1.5s, no playback crash in 2-hour soak tests)
  • Client review in under 10 seconds from the share sheet: pick a video, get a link, send it via Messages or Mail, with version stacking (v1, v2, v3) on the same link
  • Native Apple TV app for screening rooms: open a project or creator page directly, Top Shelf showing recent review videos, autoplay toggle
  • Import from Vimeo via OAuth using the official API, so creators can mirror their library and review links without re-uploading by hand
  • iOS widgets and Live Activities for upload progress and new client comments
  • Frame-accurate scrubbing and timecoded comments that work on the iPad with Apple Pencil annotations
  • Simple, transparent pricing with no surprise renewals and easy self-serve refunds

Ongoing costs

Item Providers $/month Note
Video encoding, storage and streaming delivery Cloudflare Stream or Mux $100–2500 Driven by minutes stored and minutes watched. Review traffic is light, but 4K masters and heavy clients can spike it; this is the biggest uncertainty.
Original file / master storage Cloudflare R2 or AWS S3 $15–300 Driven by TB of originals kept for download and delivery; R2 has no egress fees.
Backend, database and auth Supabase, or Fly.io plus Postgres $25–250 Covers projects, comments, links and sync of playback position; scales with active users.
Transactional email for review links and notifications Postmark or Resend $15–50 Driven by volume of review invites and comment notifications.
Push notifications Apple Push Notification service $0 APNs is free when called directly from the backend.
Crash and performance monitoring Sentry or Firebase Crashlytics $0–80 Free tier likely suffices at launch; reliability is the core promise, so this is worth paying for.
Product analytics PostHog or TelemetryDeck $0–50 Event volume; free tiers cover a few thousand users.
Subscription management RevenueCat $0–100 Free until about $2.5k MTR, then 1%.
Vimeo API for library import Vimeo API (developer.vimeo.com) $0 Free, but rate-limited and subject to Vimeo's API terms; download access depends on the user's plan.
Apple Developer Program Apple $8 $99 per year.
Ballpark total $163–3338 launch-stage, a few thousand users

Starter prompt

You're helping design a new app for people who use Vimeo (by Vimeo.com, Inc.) but are unhappy with it. Fix the problems described below. Use original branding, UI and text, and don't copy Vimeo's name, logo, assets or code.

Context: Users of the incumbent video hosting app value ad-free, high-quality video, a place where filmmakers can share work, and especially private client review links. The app has become unreliable. Search fails to load or returns zero results for known titles and creators. Playback crashes after 10-20 minutes. AirPlay drops and crashes. Skipping back 10 seconds causes endless buffering. Picture-in-picture and background audio close the app. Playback position is not remembered. Offline saves are unreliable. The app fails to launch on new iPhones. Login and password reset reject valid emails. Mobile uploads stall at 1%. Client review links are buried. The Apple TV app cannot open a creator page. Share links break. Storage bloats on the device.

We are not cloning a whole video network. We are building a focused, extremely reliable tool for creators to upload, privately share, review and deliver video to clients, and to watch it on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.

Platform: iOS 17+ and iPadOS in SwiftUI, with a tvOS target sharing a Swift package for models, networking and the player. Use native AVPlayer/AVKit for playback, AirPlay and PiP. The backend is Supabase (Postgres, auth, storage policies, edge functions) or an equivalent TypeScript service. A minimal web page (Next.js or plain server-rendered HTML) lets clients view review links without an account.

Data and services: Cloudflare Stream (or Mux) for encoding and HLS delivery via direct creator uploads plus webhooks. Cloudflare R2 for original masters. Postmark or Resend for email. APNs directly for push. Sentry for crash and performance monitoring. PostHog or TelemetryDeck for analytics. RevenueCat for subscriptions. Optionally, the Vimeo API with OAuth to import a creator's own library metadata and files, respecting its rate limits and terms.

Must-have features:
1. Sign in with Apple and email magic link, with robust email validation.
2. Resumable background chunked uploads (tus) with accurate progress, retry and a Live Activity.
3. Projects and videos with versions (v1, v2, ...).
4. One-tap private review links with optional password and expiry, opening in any browser.
5. Timecoded comments and approve/request-changes on the web page and in the app, with push and email notifications.
6. Crash-free playback with 10-second skip, AirPlay, PiP and background audio, and resume position synced via the backend.
7. Fast search over the user's own library: local index plus server full-text search in Postgres.
8. Offline downloads with a storage manager and a clear-cache control.
9. A tvOS app that browses projects and opens videos directly, with an autoplay toggle.
10. A link health check before sharing.

Differentiators: treat reliability as a feature, with performance budgets (cold start under 1.5s, zero crashes in a 2-hour playback soak including AirPlay and repeated skips). Other differentiators: a share-sheet extension that creates a review link in under 10 seconds, iPad Apple Pencil frame annotations, widgets for new client comments, tvOS Top Shelf of recent review videos, and transparent pricing.

First milestone (4-6 weeks):
- A Supabase schema for users, projects, videos, versions, review_links, comments and playback_positions, with row-level security.
- An edge function that issues Cloudflare Stream direct upload URLs and handles the ready webhook.
- An iOS app with sign-in, a project list, resumable upload of a video from Photos, and a player screen using AVPlayer with AirPlay, PiP, background audio and synced resume position.
- Creation of a review link and a public web page that plays the HLS stream and accepts timecoded comments.
- Sentry wired in.
- An XCTest/XCUITest soak test that plays a 30-minute HLS video with repeated 10-second skips and seeks without crashing.

Start by proposing the data model, API surface and Xcode project structure, then implement the upload and playback paths first.
